This English map by Captain John Smith shows New England at a very early stage. The map shows names of existing settlements and planned townships. It is interesting to note that in this 1614 map the name Sandwich appears positioned just south of the highest peak on the map, the peak appears to be called "Schooters" Hill. The image of Schooters Hill shows it to have features like the present day Mount Washington. Where the size of mountains familiar to Englishmen at the time would have been high giants (15,000 ft.), it is understandable that perhaps Captain Smith, looking inland from the coast, may have concluded that what he observed on the horizon here was a very large hill at only 6200 ft..

Scholars currently don't think so, but does the Sandwich location as seen on this 1614 map indicate that perhaps the New Hampshire town of Sandwich was foreseen long before 1773? Click to see a close-up view of Sandwich.
